Wk 9 – Artist Interview – Michael Rollins

Michael’s exhibition, “New Digs” was featured in the Gatov Galleries. Michael’s work emphasizes organic, smooth and layered paint. While doing his paintings, he is very picky about the colors; he does not use black and tries to use more warm colors. The colors he uses are meant to exert a sci-fi feel yet at the same time draw upon the history of painting; being very reminiscent of thd cave paintings early humans did thousands of years ago.
Michael says you are not supposed to understand his work, but rather experience it. While working, even when he makes a mistake he still continues. When he is finished it takes a lot of self-control to stop himself from continuing and over working the piece.
It took him a while to finally settle on his own design and look. When he first started out he started drawing and then painting. When he progressed throigh his education he became introduced to new styles and he realized he needed to move on and try new risks and take chances. Although he continues to experiment he still has aesthetics that he can’t get rid of.
