I had the pleasure of talking to Elia while she was taking questions from other students. Ms. Murray had exhibit along with other students for the “Draw This” BFA senior show. Ms. Murray’ illustration work was very interesting, and I was especially drawn to the works involving dogs (I love dogs). She mentioned she had been doing illustration for as long as she can remember, and has been a semi-serious artist since high school. She says that the inspiration for most of her work comes from everywhere, including prompts and poems. For color combinations, Ms. Murray says that Pinterest is her inspiration for finding combinations. After she graduates, she plans to dedicate herself full time to her art and start up her own business.

Wk 15 – Student Interview – Matt Stahl

Matt here is a design major at CSULB. He’s not sure which type of design he wants to go with, as he just decided on the major though he is leaning towards Graphic Design. This is his second year here and he might want to get his Master’s degree after he graduates. Matt’s a very outdoorsy person – once school is out he plans on going fishing either out in the ocean or up in the lakes by Mammoth. He commutes here from HB.
He really enjoys the TV shows Archer and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He works at Gelson’s supermarket. It’s his 21st birthday this year and he plans on going to Vegas, which is pretty cool. He has a younger sister who is a theater major. Overall he is a pretty cool guy and I’m glad I got to talk to him.

Wk 14 – Artist Interview – Yireh Elaine Kwak

Ms. Kwak was part of a themed exhibition at the Gatov gallery. She was the only artist there ( or so I believe) so the majority of us interviewed her.  She emphasized the importance of community with other artists in the exhibition. she mentioned that all the artists are very honest with each other and expressed either distaste or their approval of each other’s paintings. she mentioned that there are 15 artists all together.
Ms. Kwak had another show earlier this year and her work at this show is similar to compared to that of her last show. when she is not painting she tries to do something creative each day just to keep her mind flowing creatively. She mentioned that she does sell some of her art and that the price varies on size and effort. Her work, “Home” painted with oil on canvas was the one on exhibition in the gallery.
Ms. Kwak mentioned that she is heavily influenced by Van Gogh, Gaugan and a few other artists. She said that she was able to take a trip to Paris to see a gallery of Van Gogh’s work and it basically changed her life. She stressed the importance of never closing yourself off and always be open to new ideas.

Wk 14 – Student Interview – Hayden Leach

I had the pleasure of talking to Hayden before class. He is a fourth year junior here at CSULB. He is also an American Studies major. Which I believe he said entails American History along with English and Literature. With that degree he hopes to teach. Grade school preferably.
He is from Irvine, but moved up here for school. He does not live on campus, but rather lives nearby with a few roommates. His parents moved to Hawaii a few years back so he has been on his own. One day he would like to own an old van, such as an old VW van.
I thought this was pretty interesting: Hayden played water polo for a few years before 3 concussions ultimately ended his playing days. I never talked with anyone who has had a concussion, let alone 3, so I asked what are the symptoms. He told me it is an invisible injury, though he says he is definitely not the person who he was before and that he has some memory loss.
He told me about his plans for the summer. He said he and his friend are going to a music festival up in Vermont. The music festival there hosts bands which play some of his favorite music: Reggae/Funk/Jam Bands.

I had the pleasure of talking with Marty outside of the Werby gallery. Party is getting his MFA in printmaking here at California State University Long Beach. Marty’s work involves computer programs and mathematics to create unique and wonderful pieces of art. He likes to publish for others as lowes not working as you feel citizen port to meet people in the know people to expand your horizons. For the show he collaborated with a few other people.
When you came to is art he basically just jumps in and figures it out from there. He gets used to things working out and considers himself an optimist. before his choice on his major he took a lot of math and night classes especially calculus. he values what the math community has to share. Marty mentioned that he is interested in printing and would like to attempt to work with the 3d printer at one point especially the one located on campus. for his pieces of art he limits the color for cost efficiency. that and the color ratio to that of the one on the monitor is vastly different as the monitor can process more colors than the printer can print

Wk 13 – Student Interview – Kelsey Lewis

image

I have the pleasure of talking to Kelsey before we journeyed into the galleries. She is a journalism major and it’s her first year here at California State University Long Beach. Even though she’s in journalism major she’s tempted to go into photo journalism and she wants to minor in business. With her degree she would really like to get in the National Geographic and be a journalist  for that or get a job at a newspaper.
I asked her if she wanted to get her master’s degree but she said she’s fine with a bachelor’s degree. She’s the middle child in her family. her parents put a lot of pressure on her for her studies and it shows she works hard she’s currently taking 14 units right now and she’s going to take 14 more next semester. I learned an interesting fact about Kelsey, her uncle works as a  marching band coordinator. Apparently he’s pretty famous use well known among various marching bands throughout the Orange County area.
I asked Kelsey was her dream car would be and apparently she’s into old classic cars and she would either want an old Mustang or an old Volkswagen van. Kelsey is also apparently in the classic rock as she enjoys KISS, Journey and others.

Wk 12 – Activity – Algorithmic Art

For this activity  I decided to go for something a little more simple. I decided to go with a square and diamond shape algorithmic art.

image

I started with a normal square from there I drew a diamond on the inside of the square the top of the diamond starting at the top of the square. The size of the square can vary to the preference of the artist. I feel personally the larger the square the more I can get into the image which is why I went with a larger square at the beginning.

image

From there it’s just a simple copy and paste or repeat method. Draw a square on the inside of the diamond and then when you’re done with the square draw diamond inside of the square. Repeat this is often as you can until you run out of space creating an illusion that I think looks really neat.

While I think this is probably a very basic algorithmic art I think it’s still very effective and very fun to look at and it’s very easy for anyone to do. I feel that algorithmic art can be both very basic and very complex. For me personally I feel like the more basic it is the easier it is to reach the audience.
